USA-China Cooperation: Can the Two Powers Avoid Conflict?
The relationship between the United States and China is one of the most important issues in global politics. The two countries are major economic and technological powers, but they also compete over trade, artificial intelligence, technology, Taiwan and strategic influence.
The recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on September 24, 2026, has once again brought the question of USA-China cooperation into focus. What Happened at the Trump-Xi Meeting?
During the meeting, Xi Jinping said that China and the United States should strengthen communication, build mutual trust and maintain regular military dialogue. He also suggested improving mechanisms for crisis communication and prevention.

What Is the Thucydides Trap?
The term comes from the Greek historian Thucydides, who studied the conflict between Athens and Sparta.
In modern international-relations discussions, the term describes the risk of conflict when a rising power challenges an established power. Political scientist Graham Allison later popularised the concept in discussions about the rise of China and the established position of the United States.
However, the concept is a framework for analysing great-power rivalry, not a prediction that war between the US and China is inevitable.

Despite their strategic competition, the United States and China have several areas where dialogue can be useful.
1. Artificial Intelligence
AI has become a major area of competition between the two countries. At the same time, both sides face common risks related to AI safety, cyberattacks, misinformation and critical infrastructure.
Xi said AI development should remain under human control. Discussions between the two countries have also included possible mechanisms for AI-related communication and risk management.
2. Trade
Trade remains another major area of engagement. The two countries agreed to extend their existing trade truce until January 10, giving Washington and Beijing additional time for negotiations.
3. Military Communication
Regular communication between the two militaries can help reduce the risk of misunderstanding during periods of tension. This becomes particularly important in sensitive areas such as the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific.

The US-China relationship directly affects India because both countries are important economic and strategic partners of New Delhi.
Improved US-China relations could influence global trade, supply chains, technology, investment, energy markets and Indo-Pacific geopolitics. At the same time, continuing competition could encourage countries such as India to diversify supply chains and strengthen strategic partnerships.
