BRICS 2026: New Delhi Declaration and Its Importance for India

The 18th BRICS Summit 2026 was held in New Delhi on 12–13 September 2026 under India’s chairship. The summit was held with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The most important outcome was the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, which sets out the group’s priorities on global governance, trade, terrorism, technology, development and international cooperation.

What is BRICS?

BRICS is a major grouping of emerging and developing economies. It has expanded significantly from its original members and now includes 11 countries.

The grouping aims to strengthen cooperation among its members and give developing countries a stronger voice in global institutions. For India, BRICS is an important platform for promoting the interests of the Global South.

Major Outcome: New Delhi Declaration

The New Delhi Declaration contains 140 points covering a wide range of international and economic issues. It reaffirmed the importance of a more representative, fair and inclusive international system.

One of the major issues was the need for reform of global institutions, particularly the United Nations Security Council. BRICS members reiterated support for greater representation of developing countries in global decision-making institutions.

Focus on Terrorism

Terrorism remained an important security issue. The declaration strongly condemned terrorism and emphasised the need for international cooperation against terrorist activities and their financing.

For India, this is particularly important because India has consistently highlighted the need for a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism and opposed double standards in dealing with terrorist organisations.

Trade and Protectionism

BRICS also expressed concern over rising unilateral tariffs and non-tariff barriers. The declaration argued that such measures can distort international trade and undermine the rules-based trading system.

The group reaffirmed its support for the World Trade Organization (WTO) and called for a fair and inclusive global trading system.

BRICS also discussed greater use of local currencies and improved cross-border payment systems. However, the summit did not create a common BRICS currency. Instead, the focus remained on making existing payment systems more efficient and interconnected.

Technology and Artificial Intelligence

Technology was another important area of cooperation.

The declaration highlighted the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and called for safe, inclusive and equitable access to emerging technologies. Cooperation in science, technology and innovation was seen as an important driver of economic and social development.

This is significant for India because the country is developing rapidly in areas such as digital public infrastructure, AI and emerging technologies.

Importance for India

India's BRICS chairship gave New Delhi an opportunity to place issues important to developing countries at the centre of global discussions.

India promoted cooperation in areas such as digital infrastructure, health, sustainable development, technology and economic cooperation. Several initiatives were also advanced during India's year-long chairship.

The summit also demonstrated India's approach of strategic autonomy. BRICS was not presented simply as an anti-Western grouping; instead, India emphasised a more representative and balanced global order.

Challenges Ahead

BRICS has considerable economic and diplomatic weight, but its members have different national interests. Differences over international conflicts, trade and relations with major powers can make consensus difficult.

Therefore, the real test will be whether the New Delhi Declaration leads to practical cooperation and measurable outcomes.

Why is BRICS Important for UPSC?

For Civil Services aspirants, BRICS connects with:

  • International Relations
  • Global South
  • Strategic Autonomy
  • Multipolar World
  • Global Governance
  • WTO and International Trade
  • Terrorism
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Digital Economy
  • India’s Foreign Policy

The 18th BRICS Summit 2026 strengthened India's role in shaping discussions on global governance and development. The New Delhi Declaration shows that BRICS is increasingly focusing not only on geopolitics but also on trade, technology, sustainability, financial cooperation and the interests of developing countries.

For India, the challenge now is to convert these commitments into practical cooperation and strengthen its position as an important voice of the Global South.
