Houthi Issue: Why Yemen and the Red Sea Matter to the World

The Houthi issue has once again become an important international security and economic concern. The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, are an armed movement based in Yemen that has controlled Sana’a and large parts of northern Yemen since 2014. Their conflict with Yemen’s internationally recognised government has continued for years. 

The issue has now become much bigger than Yemen because of the strategic location of the country along the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Who are the Houthis?

The Houthis emerged from northern Yemen and became a powerful political and military movement. In 2014, they took control of Sana’a, which contributed to the beginning of the major phase of Yemen’s civil war.

The conflict has involved the internationally recognised Yemeni government, the Houthi movement and regional powers. Iran has provided support to the Houthis, while Saudi Arabia has supported forces opposing them.

Why is the Red Sea important?

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean. It is an important route for international shipping, including energy supplies and other goods.

Houthi attacks on commercial vessels since 2023 brought global attention to this maritime corridor. The United Nations Security Council has repeatedly addressed the threat to commercial shipping and freedom of navigation.

In September 2026, the situation became more serious as Houthi forces advanced along Yemen's western coast towards Bab el-Mandeb and reportedly captured several islands in the southern Red Sea. The UN has warned that the situation around the strait has become increasingly volatile.

Why does this matter for India?

The Red Sea is important for India's trade, energy security and supply chains. Disruption in the region can increase shipping time and transportation costs because ships may need to take longer alternative routes.

The wider regional instability can also affect oil prices, food prices, insurance costs and international trade. The UN has warned that prolonged disruption of major maritime routes could affect global energy markets, food security and economies beyond the region.

India also has strong economic and strategic interests in the Indian Ocean Region, making maritime security an important topic for the country.

Humanitarian Dimension

The Houthi conflict is not only a geopolitical issue. It has also created a serious humanitarian crisis.

Recent fighting along Yemen's western coast has displaced tens of thousands of people. According to the UN and IOM, more than 85,000 people had been displaced by September 2026, with some people crossing the Red Sea towards Djibouti.
