Critical Mineral Recycling: Why It Matters for India’s Future

Critical minerals have become an important part of the global economy because they are essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy, electronics, batteries, defence equipment and advanced technologies. India is now focusing not only on mining these minerals but also on recycling them from waste.

The issue has gained fresh attention in September 2026 as the government continues to work with the recycling industry to strengthen India’s critical-mineral recycling ecosystem and reduce dependence on imported raw materials. The government is also considering further reforms and an incentive framework for the sector.

What Are Critical Minerals?

Critical minerals are minerals that are important for the economy and strategic sectors but may face risks in terms of availability or supply.

Examples include lithium, cobalt, nickel and certain rare earth elements. These minerals are used in lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles, wind turbines, electronics and other advanced technologies.

Their importance has increased because the global transition towards clean energy requires large quantities of these materials.

Why Does India Need Recycling?

India imports many of the minerals and raw materials required for advanced manufacturing. This creates a supply-chain challenge because global production of several critical minerals is concentrated in a limited number of countries.

Recycling can provide an additional domestic source.

Old lithium-ion batteries, electronic waste and industrial scrap can contain valuable materials. Instead of treating them only as waste, advanced recycling technologies can recover minerals and return them to the production cycle.

This approach supports the idea of a circular economy, where resources are reused instead of being continuously extracted and discarded.

India’s Critical Mineral Recycling Scheme

The Union Cabinet approved a ₹1,500 crore Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Critical Mineral Recycling in September 2025. The scheme is part of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) and aims to develop domestic capacity to recover critical minerals from secondary sources.

The eligible feedstock includes e-waste, spent lithium-ion batteries and other scrap. Both established recyclers and smaller companies, including startups, can participate.

By April 2026, the Ministry of Mines had found 58 companies eligible under the scheme. These companies had pledged around 850 thousand tonnes per annum of recycling capacity and approximately ₹5,000 crore of investment.

Why Is This Important for India?

Critical-mineral recycling can help India in several areas:

  • Reduce import dependence
  • Strengthen supply-chain security
  • Support electric mobility
  • Promote renewable-energy technologies
  • Encourage scientific research and innovation
  • Create new green industries and employment
  • Reduce waste and environmental pressure from mining

The government has also highlighted the role of recycling in strengthening India's resource security and circular economy.
